General Vibes: Unfortunately lilywhite and milquetoast. Or: "I don't look like someone who used to do anything. I look like I was just sitting in a room with a chair eating saltines for 28 years and then I walked right out here.", John Mulaney.
Notable Features: Honestly, very few. He's one of those faces that melts into a crowd.

PERSONALITY
LOYAL While he's selective about the people he considers to be "his people", he's very ride or die for his people. This is probably the most Hufflepuff thing about him, even he looks placid and friendly on the surface. He'll do just about anything for his siblings or his good friends.

UPTIGHT Briar was notorious at Hogwarts for being unfun and persistently uncomfortable. This made him a target for a lot of good-natured bullying, which was not a great experience for him, because he has a lot of pent-up... everything. He hardly ever loses his cool thanks to his compulsive need to seem put-together and grown-up, but when he does he has a tendency to flip his lid.

RESPONSIBLE Olive is even more forgetful than their father, and Briar was frequently the one stopping her from doing stupid things when they were kids. He has a level of anxiety about this, even though he now knows that Olive probably won't die if he leaves her unattended. But this anxiety also causes him to be extra-responsible as a reactionary response. He almost never misplaces his things, he gets everywhere half an hour early so he's never late, and deadlines are sacred to him.

CANNY In social situations, you can usually find him wallflowering. From this safe distance, he likes to observe, and he is a constant student in human character. His sharp nose for sniffing out drama between friends, nascent crushes being harbored, and carefully kept secrets is what makes him a good reporter (and an even better gossip blogger), but it never manages to translate into social skills for him. He is his own blindspot, and he never knows what anyone thinks of him or if he's getting away with his lies, which is a source of constant anxiety.

CO-DEPENDANT Certainly on his sister and mother particularly, the former of whom he feels like he needs to protect 24/7 and the latter of whom he still asks advice from before making a big purchase. But he also has a habit of forming close, co-dependent friendships and sticking to those friendships without branching out from them much. He's never been in a serious long-term relationship, but he very much has the personality of someone who completely disappears into their partner.

History:
Briar's childhood largely comprised of two activities. The first was making sure that his twin sister, Olive, didn't accidentally kill herself with her absent-mindedness or negligence. The number of times Olive was actually seconds from death is probably really low, but Briar has had anxiety since he was seven years old, and to this day he's convinced that it's a miracle when she makes it to the end of each day unharmed.

The second was bothering the clientele of the Leaky Cauldron, which his mother owned and the family lived above. The customer base there was and still is largely war-grizzled and upper-middle-aged wizards, who have lived through one to two major wars. Briar considers himself an old soul at heart, and always found cantankerous 75 year old men with inappropriate war stories to be much better company than other children. He got his love of writing from listening to those stories; he still has piles of notebooks full of his amateurish recountings of them. If he ever did, like, real art with his life he would probably want to be a biographer. But that was not the course his life was destined to take.

His first years at Hogwarts were not much different than his early life; more keeping Olive alive, more occasional meltdowns when she disappeared into the Forbidden Forest for days, more pestering his war veteran professors about their sad and storied pasts. Things changed when his parents started working there: first his father as the herbology professor, and eventually his mother as the school nurse.

Being as clingy a child as he was, he actually enjoyed having his parents around, but it made him even more socially reserved than he'd already been. It was difficult for Hannah particularly to turn him away and make him go interact with students his own age instead of eating his lunch underneath her desk in the infirmary, but she did it. Which was a massive betrayal, in Briar's opinion. He didn't want friends.

But having friends didn't turn out to be as terrible as he thought it would. He did eventually manage to make his way into the Hufflepuff cohort, although the "fond" teasing from the girls sometimes rankled him. The fact that he was made prefect in his fifth year was definitely thanks to some string-pulling from his parents, but it also encouraged him to branch out more.

He's still really not sure why this happened (he lightly blames the stress of NEWT level courses), but in his seventh year he quickly snowballed into some behavioral problems. He'd always seemed like a mild-mannered boy to everyone else at the school, including his parents, but it was like he'd suddenly just had enough of being a doormat. He had a lot of anger problems his final year in school, and almost lost his prefect badge over getting in a fistfight with a classmate who'd insulted Olive. This was all noticed and remarked upon by his parents and teachers, but it happened so close to graduation that they all sort of just... wrote it off as a fluke.

And his general success in his adult life would suggest it is, although he hasn't worked out any of his shit really. He's usually able to keep a lid on his anger, especially at work, and his good work ethic and otherwise palatable personality made up for the one or two times he did snap at a coworker. He would probably get in some personal or professional trouble if anyone found out that he runs an anonymous gossip rag which regularly features the exploits of many of the Henhurst residents, but... nobody's found that out yet, so he thinks it'll be okay? Moving in was equal parts following Olive and wanting more gossip material.
